This Hisense R6 Series review goes over the impressive performance of this budget smart TV made by a manufacturer you might not even be familiar with. Hisense is one of the newer TV manufacturers around and their earliest televisions were a bit disappointing.
It became quite obvious early into our Hisense R6 Series review that lessons were learned from the failures of their first offerings. The R6 series delivers excellent picture quality and Smart engine performance at regular HD television prices. TVs in the series are available in 43, 50, 55, and 64 inches.
Hisense R6 Series review: First thoughts
The R6 provides a great mix of affordability and performance. The TV gives you high definition 4K quality pictures and its smart engine is powered by Roku software. It comes with an easy-to-use Roku interface that is pretty much self-explanatory. It comes with HDR functionality, taking your gaming and movie picture quality to a greater level of detail, contrast, and clarity.
It only takes a minute or so to set the R6 up. Settings from other Roku devices you might already own can be imported so you have all your channels and apps set up as you like.
Picture quality
Pictures are crystal clear with deep blacks and sharp contrast when watching this TV. The picture quality remains consistent when gaming and the HDR function makes graphics even clearer. With a 120Hz refresh rate, it’s an excellent television for gaming. HDR features of some smart TV end up making pictures look less realistic, but the R6 does not have that issue.
The smart interface serves as a home for all the apps on the TV and it’s used to switch inputs to gaming consoles and other devices. You simply click the gaming icon in the interface, and it switches over to the HDMI port your gaming console is connected to.

The R6 comes with voice controls that make finding your favorite media as easy as saying what you want. The television can also be controlled with an app that is available for android and IOS devices. Thanks to the app, you can also send audio from the TV to your phone so you can listen to it via a wired earpiece or Bluetooth device. It’s a nice little feature for times you want to watch a late-night movie or play some video games without disturbing others in the home.
Upscaling feature
TVs in the R6 series also come with an upscaling feature that upgrades the quality of media being watched. It means poor quality content – like 480p – automatically get an upgrade when watched on this TV. It will not upgrade it up to 4k, but you will see noticeable improvements when watched on this TV compared to other devices without upscaling.
Other noteworthy features of the R6 series include:
- 200 x 200mm VESA mounting holes
- 120Hz refresh rate
- One Ethernet port
- Dolby Vision HDR
- One-year manufacturer warranty
- Voice controls
- An RF Antenna input
- 3 HDMI ports
- One USB port
- One L/R audio input for composite
- One RCA Composite Video Input
- One digital audio output
- One earphone/audio output
Audio
Given how well this TV performs when it comes to picture quality and gaming performance, it’s not surprising to find its inbuilt speakers lacking a bit. They are called budget TVs for a reason and the savings have to come from somewhere.
It’s worth investing in a soundbar to get the most out of your viewing experience. The inbuilt speakers are good enough for anyone who isn’t picky about sound quality, but you can forget about trying to entertain guests with music from the TV during your next party.
Pros:
- Clear, crisp pictures
- Has the ideal refresh rate for gaming at 120Hz
- TV audio can be streamed to a smartphone
- Earphone jack available
Cons:
- Below average inbuilt speakers
Hisense R6 Series review verdict: One of the best deals on the market
The R6 is one of the best deals you can find when it comes to budget televisions. The sound system is below average, but everything else beats the competition or is on par with them. It’s an excellent TV for gamers with its HDR feature and 120Hz refresh rate. It’s just as great for enjoying 4K movies and TV shows. Click here to learn more about the 6 series.
